Why My Muscles Don't Grow? Cortisol Stress Hormone Destroy Muscle

There are many reasons why your muscles don't grow. One main culprit is cortisol, a stress hormone produced by your body when you are under stressful situations. Yes, any type of stress, whether they are mental stress, physical stress or even emotional stress will signal to your body to increase the level of cortisol hormones.

When you exercise or especially weightlifting body building exercises, you are placing tremendous stress on your body. This in turn will cause the cortisol hormone in your body to rise to unacceptable level which may destroy your muscle tissues, bone density mass and causes weight gain especially so in abdominal fat storage.

Stress HormonesThis hormone hates your muscles and wants you to grow fat. It takes away protein from the muscles. However to be fair to this hormone, the cortisol hormone has its uses.

Cortisol is produced by the adrenal cortex and is commonly known as a stress hormone because the level of cortisol in your body rises sharply when you are under stress. This hormone plays an important role in your body's metabolic function, it facilitates cardiovascular function, carbohydrate metabolism and controls inflammation. After all, it is a steroid hormone.

As more cortisol is being produced, your muscle tissue breaks down further since the amino acids from your muscle protein is being converted into glucose for energy. This hormone also blocks new muscle tissues from growing because it interferes in protein synthesis in your muscles.

How to lower cortisol level?

Get enough sleep - Let your body recuperate from the day's stress and let the body rebuild its wears and tears. A lack of sleep will put your body under further stress and thus increasing cortisol levels.

Avoid stress - Take up yoga, read a book, take a break from whatever you are doing. Learn meditation and breathing techniques to reduce everyday stress. Take a week or so break from your exercise routine after 6-8 weeks of regular training. As your body learns how to relax, the level of cortisol hormone will fall correspondingly.

Do not over train - Over training is a common issue amongst athletes of all types. This is especially so in bodybuilding and weight lifting. You are already damaging your muscles when you lift weights, don't let cortisol hormones rob your muscles of the much needed proteins and preventing muscle repair and growth.

Once your body and mind is free from stress, your cortisol production will be at a healthy level and you will once again see your muscles growing again. Of course that is provided that you are doing other things required in building muscles correctly.

Haven't slept all night. How can I stay up until bed time?
I haven't slept all night and have been sleeping very poorly for months. I feel very tired at strange times like at noon, right now i'm out of work so I just go to sleep but I'm worried about when I get a job. How am I going to get this sleep schedule in order? I've tried exercise, meditation, less coffee, fruits and veggies and lean meats with lots of water and I make sure to take care of business before "bed time" but I just can't sleep! I'm thinking of staying up all the way until bed time but the problem I am having is that I feel very tense and over-loaded with stress hormone if I stay up too long, is there a way to reduce stress and make it until tonight? Also my muscles have begun to twitch all over, my calves, eyelid, abs, thumb and back etc all twitch because I've not had any good rest. urrrrg.

Are you born gay, is it all in the mind? please read?
I copied this for a blog, tell me your feedback on it please? "Basically during pregnancy if the mother is stressed, her body releases a stress related hormone (androstendione) which is similar in structure as testosterone, but is not the same thing. This hormone enters the developing fetus through the umbilical cord and is shown to stick to nerve tissue. Androstendione by the way is also produced in higher levels with each male child a women gives birth to. If this happens while the child's brain is developing (in the first three months of pregnancy) it may stick to key areas of the hypothalamus. This area of the brain is what some call "the brain's brain" this area controls how we perceive the world, what gives us pleasure, and how we perceive potential mates! The stress hormone may block testosterone from reaching the hypothalamus, or certain areas of it. The growing brain cells, never receiving the testosterone that signals them to become male, carry out their default setting, which is to become female! So in the hypothalamus, or at least the areas that the hormone was stuck to, the child is female even though the rest of his body is male. What does this mean? Basically, if the areas of the hypothalamus that are responsible for finding a mate are female, than this child will look for the same type of mates a female would! In other words, he'll perceive males as a female would, and find them attractive as a female would. It's important to note that homosexuality is not always the result of a stressful pregnancy. However women who reported stress during the first three months of pregnancy were more likely have boys who display at least some feminine characteristics, attraction to other males, being one of these possible characteristics. Now, here's my take on all this: Basically this sticky hormone goes in, shields the hypothalamus from testosterone, and makes parts of it all girly. However, if the entire hypothalamus were to be feminized, the person would probably feel like a girl trapped in man's body. This would be an transgendered person, not a homosexual. So my own personal theory is that it does stick to the hypothalamus, but it can be only in certain areas, or the entire hypothalamus and even other brain tissues. For instance, if only a small amount enters the child's bloodstream, only a small amount will make it to the hypothalamus and obviously, not all areas of the hypothalamus will be shielded from testosterone. Where it ends up could be anywhere. It could be areas that are responsible for a few personalty traits. It could be only the area that controls gender identity. It can be just the part that controls sexual orientation. The result would be a vast spectrum of possible sexual and gender identities depending on what areas were covered, and how much of the area is covered." WHY WOULD HAVING OLDER BROTHERS MAKE YOU GAY :\
