Everyone undergoes stressful situations at some point in their lives. Many people quickly recover and move on, while others tend to experience deep emotional and physical reactions that linger for months or years.
The worst life experiences are those involving deaths in the family, illness and other significant life changes. Depression is one common reaction.
For people with inherent depressive tendencies, however, this can be catastrophic. Their lives seem increasingly hopeless as recovery moves out of reach. Sometimes, the depression is so profound that medical intervention is necessary. In other cases, emotional support from friends and family is enough to break the depression and bring positive solutions to light.
In some cases, the stress of dealing with these situations magnifies and invisible physical changes result, some of them life threatening. Researchers have learned that stress is a risk factor for heart disease and cancer.
Stress hormones increase blood pressure and fatty acids in the bloodstream that eventually block the arteries. The restriction causes the heart to work harder and heart disease is the result.
Sustained stress also depresses the immune system through hormonal changes, leaving the body more susceptible to infectious diseases. It's not uncommon for people under stress to complain of frequent colds and other conditions. In its weakened condition, the body also is less capable of fighting off cancer cells, putting the person at risk of developing the disease.
The full effect of stress on the body is not entirely known, but researchers agree that stress can be detrimental to the body and trigger any number of diseases.
Of course, stress also has a profound effect on our mental and emotional states as well. Apart from causing depression, it can have a significant impact on our overall level of confidence and self worth. Anxiety and phobias can result.
Some people develop irrational fears of things like going into public places, eating in a restaurant, attending classes, or driving a vehicle. It's easy to see how low self esteem can play a major role in depression and anxiety.
Divorce is a prime example of a situation that can lower a person's confidence. Learning that your whole life is about to change and will not develop as you intended can be a tremendous blow to your self esteem.
Even if you initiated the divorce, it's only natural for you to question your role in the relationship, your decision to end it, and to wonder about your future. Doubts can lead to worries and anxiety about the unknown.
Battling through stressful events can be difficult, but researchers have determined two coping mechanisms that work quite effectively.
To prevent stress from turning into anxiety and depression, you can decide to react emotionally or by problem solving. While problem solving is the best and most effective choice, sometimes people need to utilize both methods.
Responding emotionally, you might seek ways to escape, like watching television for hours on end or find another distraction. This method allows you to avoid the emotional disturbance until you are more emotionally secure to handle the situation.
That's when the second choice would be utilized. Use your problem solving skills. Instead of focusing on your emotions, look for solutions that will minimize how severe the event will affect you.
If you are at risk of losing your home, a job, or your husband, look for solutions rather than becoming emotionally upset. You might seek alternative sources of income, seek family mediation, or start preparing for the inevitable and look forward to something better.
Some people might benefit most by applying all avenues of escapism. Then, when the shock of the immediate crisis begins to fade, they are better able to find more positive and productive solutions.
Emotion-focused coping is only a short-term approach that allows you to reduce stress and collect yourself before moving on. At some point, however, you will need to take a realistic look at your situation and develop a plan of action.

i heard from other sources that taking the medication Citalopram alone will only decrease stress and depression
But is it true that when you smoke weed with it you will experience a "trip", like as if you are on acid?

How do I battle the pain, stress and depression I have?
I have been feeling unhappy and depressed for a while now, about 6 months.
I am never really happy and I always feel miserable and distressed. It all started when I didn't do as good as I had expected on the January Science exams. They carry a weight of 25% of my final grade. I achieved 3 B's (Biology, Chemistry and Physics) and an A (retake in which I had previously obtained an A). For the work and effort I had put in I was distraught as I had thought I had done enough to warrant A*'s in all four of these exams. I was very unhappy prior to this but this was the my climax of misery.
Every day I feel compounded with sadness and I can never fully be happy, no matter what I do. I probably cry every day to try and alleviate the pain I have. There is constantly an excruciating pain in my chest and neck which cause more hurt but nothing compared to the hurt I face every day.
I would do anything for the pain to go away but as well as this, the stress I face to do well and overcome these emotions makes me feel anxious. The stress is causing me to worry and consequently makes me upset when I remember my results.
The stress and the January results have hugely dented my confidence. I aspire to do well but the results made me fall well short of my expectations and subsequently I fell sad, upset and withdrawn all the time. I do not know who else to confide to in this matter as I don't have any close friends and I could not talk to my family about this as I could not bear for anyone close to me to hear the battle I am facing and I have been facing.
If there is anyone who can help me please do not hesitate to respond. Whether it is to try and help me get rid of the stress or pain I have I would greatly appreciate your help in this matter. Thank you for taking care into reading about this but please do not respond by saying to pray as I have tried but the damage is to great to be healed like that and I do not believe in it anyway.
Whether you have experienced these emotions before or haven't I do not mind, your words will be greatly welcome.

Thank you for your advice, I really think that it is good and it may be able to distract me from the pain. As for my results, I am really unhappy about them. I will ensure I do much better next time but there is nothing worse then underachieving considerably with the grades I got, with the work I put in. All the money, time and effort has in effect been wasteful and there is nothing worse then failing to achieve the appropriate grades for my family than myself.
I am sure the pain in my neck and chest are due to the pain I constantly feel ever since then but nevertheless I will get it checked out.

That is exactly how I am feeling. I didn't know anyone could comprehend it as well as you have done. I will now look at things in a positive aspect and your words have echoed my thoughts and feelings. I will wait until the pain goes away but I hope it will be soon because I do not think I can continue to be unhappy any longer. Thank you for your response, I just wonder though, do you know any way to stop the stress and depression I currently have?

When I said I was never happy, I meant to say that my past results have caused me to be unhappy. I did not mean or indicate to say that I was never happy only that due to my past results not being sufficient have led me to be unhappy recently. However thank you for you help and advice as I have found it useful..
Hmmm. Bio, Chem & Physics. That's a heavy load. And the symptoms you are telling me are frightening. If your school has counseling for the depression your are experiencing you need to
take advantage of that ASAP. I don't hear you mention anything about friends or anything social,
so maybe you lack a good social network as well... not to party but people to vent with or console.
I won't ask you to pray (which you need to do anyway) but I will pray for you... right after I hit the "submit" button.
