Do you think medication would be my best option?
I've had problems with social anxiety for a while now. I've been in college for a year and a quarter now and I have made zero friends. I saw a counselor at my school for six months and she tried doing exposure and cognitive therapy which did absoultely nothing. I've also read a book and many articles about overcoming social anxiety. I've changed a lot of negative thoughts into more positive ones. If I do something stupid or embarrassing, I don't think about it too much as I used to. But I still experience anxiety in social situations. Like an example would be, someone I knew pretty well sat down next to me in class and I was too afraid to say hello to him. When I do things that make me anxious, I do them several times successfully but at the same time, i still avoid them sometimes after doing it successfully every time. When my roommates are hanging out in someone's room, i'll be in my room and I'll want to go join them but I still experience anxiety and to avoid doing it sometimes, I'll go on wikipedia and read random articles. I know they like me and want to get to know me but I have too much anxiety to show them that I want to get to know them. Would medication be my best option if cognitive and exposure therapy don't work? How severe does the anxiety have to be for medication? Also, i've been coping with my anxiety in unhealthy ways and when my roommates invite me to go to parties with them I'll get drunk because it gets rid of my social anxiety.

Overcoming social anxiety in a college setting?
I have severe social anxiety disorder to the point where I am scared to talk to anyone who I may imagine is "better" than me because I feel as though I'm not good enough to talk to them. I avoid talking on the telephone and in public at all costs. I have a very physical reaction when asked to speak up (for example, my heart starts racing and I feel faint). This fall I started college and I thought I may be able to break out of that social fear because I was in a new setting and I could be whoever I wanted to be. I quickly realized that being in a new setting did not matter and I still had the same reaction to talking to people. I've had the most difficult time making any kind of connection with anyone. This has led me to dangerous and depressing behavior to the point where I just want to be home all the time. I feel as though I'm all alone in this too because everyone else seems to have made a ton of friends already and I can't. This depresses me even more. I am attending counseling sessions at the campus counsel center, but it's not really working that well for me. Is there any suggestion anybody can give me at this point? I feel absolutely hopeless.
