Alarming Truths of Teenage Stress - Facts About Stress That Every Parent Should Know

Do teenagers react differently than adults to the physical and psychological pressures of stress and anxiety syndrome? In a word, the answer is yes sort of. Youth gives teenagers an advantage when it comes to warding off most physical symptoms of stress and anxiety, but in an ironic twist this same youth that protects them from much of the physical harm associated with teenage stress and anxiety syndrome can magnify the psychological symptoms and exacerbate the mental trauma.

The resiliency of their younger bodies allows teenagers to fight many of the debilitating effects of stress and anxiety for a time. Most teenagers do not have to worry about such things as heart disease, high blood pressure, and hair loss to name a few, but that said, just because these symptoms are more easily warded off by teens does not mean that their bodies are not affected by prolonged and severe exposure to stress and anxiety. Also, obesity is one of the physical symptoms of stress and anxiety that is becoming increasingly more prevalent amongst teens.

Youth can act to the detriment of teens when it comes to the psychological symptoms of stress and anxiety, because teenagers simply do not have the life experiences of adults. This lack of life experience translates into a lack of the necessary coping skills for dealing with the psychological pressures of stress and anxiety. Lack of coping skills is the key difference between adults and teenagers when it comes to stress, anxiety, frustration, anger, addiction, and depression.

Parents, teachers, and others responsible for the wellbeing of teenagers need to be very cognizant of the fact that when it comes to effectively dealing with stress and anxiety teens need your help. We look at them and they look like adults, but we cannot be fooled by appearances. The apparent physical maturity of teens often blinds us to their lack of psychological maturity, which can leave them vulnerable to stress and anxiety syndrome.

Many of the same tips and techniques that are effective for adult stress management are also effective in managing teen stress and anxiety symptoms. As a responsible adult it is your duty to monitor and assist teens during stressful times. Because of their desire for independence they may not come to you for help, so it is imperative that you are vigilant and take a proactive stance towards dealing with teenage stress.
