Teens, what instrument should I learn to play, Guitar or Bass?
I decided that I'm done with all this percussion stuff. I've been wanting to learn either guitar or bass since I was a little kid. And I think it'll be pretty fun to expand my musical horizons other than just playing random notes on a guitar and see what I can make. I have very small hands for a guy, I don't know if that'll affect anything. I also think that PLAYING rock music will help my anger when I'm in high school this August. What do you think?

5 Ways to Better Cope with Stress
7 Apr 2011 at 12:35pm When trying to manage stress, Richard Blonna, Ed.D — a nationally certified coach and counselor and author of Stress Less, Live More — said that many people mistakenly look for a Band-Aid approach. They look for one approach to work with all stressors in all situations at all times. But realistically you can’t rely on one technique. For instance, diaphragmatic breathing is an effective stress reliever but you might not want to use it in a certain situation because you’re feeling self-conscious and don’t want to bring attention to yourself, he said. Similarly, while Blonna is a big believer in meditation, he said it doesn’t work if you’re stuck in traffic, since it’s dangerous to close your eyes. Instead, “What we need is a toolbox that’s full of techniques tha...Read more...
18 Ways to Manage Stress
23 Jun 2010 at 11:19am In her insightful book, “The Superstress Solution,” Roberta Lee, M.D. assesses the stress level in most homes today, and offers a word of caution about chronic stress. In her introduction, she writes: We’re deluding ourselves if we think that we can indefinitely endure the macro stresses that accompany impersonal encounters, less sleep, more work, less leisure, raising kids in this dangerous world, bad marriages, less exercise, junk and processed foods eaten on the run, hyper-caffeinated and sugar-saturated beverages, addictive devices that give us “screen sickness,” traffic jams, flight delays, and so much more, and come away unscathed. Stress isn’t all, bad, of course. In fact, like dark chocolate, small chunks here and there can be good for you, or a...Read more...
An Overmedicated Nation? That’s Not the Real Problem
12 May 2010 at 4:05am “Our country is over-medicated.” I get that a lot, usually right after I tell someone that I write a mental health blog. Not as a hobby. As my job. Part of me agrees, the part that doesn’t want to get into a long and frustrating conversation, where I explain that it’s really not that simple… That the issue is fairly nuanced and complex. Are some people overmedicated in this country? Yes. Absolutely. I devote a few chapters of my book, Beyond Blue, to describing the dangerous phase in my recovery led by a doctor whom I call “Pharma King.” I was taking something like 16 pills a day, enough to drop my head into my cereal bowl every morning for about three months. And I wasn’t at all uncomfortable with how the nurses at the outpatient psych prog...Read more...
